Maybe it's the name 'wooded' that made me paint this creation on a wooden box!
This is a premiere for me and I informed me up front (thank you LJMpaintings!) on how to proceed with such endeavour.
Wooden box had a size of 14"x20" and was first sandpapered, received two layers of black gesso and then applied some liquid white and liquid clear on it.
Thoughest part was the very light colouring overall. In general, I believe this painting is not dark enough, but that's my own opinion. 100 minutes of fun, that's a fact!
The contact paper stuck like never before. Was that due to the smooth wooden surface??
Hope you all might try box painting once, it really is something special. Please read the article!!
lovely painting, and hopefully the box is also useful and will be displayed somewhere too!
Yes voy it's probably due to the smooth surface. For instant darkness you would have had to leave more of the black showing through but good news for you, when you paint over a black background it does usually darken down all by itself as it dries. See my "after the rain" painting, I scraped up all the greens and brown and blues left on my pallet to get the colour for the foreground foliage, it gave me a nice rich colour over the black background. Very nice painting voy! Painting on something other than a standard canvas shows creativity, well done.
I love this Voy, it really does have a 3D effect, the dark greens draw you to the centre and those beautiful trees. A real head turner 👍
Thank you for your support Broknex!
Thanks LMrs. C., the box is now in my attic to dry at bets circimstances. End of spring, it will be varnished and uses as my paint tube box, visible to all in the house!
Thank you TLP, a very welcomed comment!
I'm rather uncomfortable with dark paintings so perhaps that is why I painted this one a little too bright!
Nivek, so much love the 'head turner' pointing!
Voy, it looks great! Wonderful to keep paint tubes!
I watched few instructors and many of them are saying that many people fear to put dark values and subconsciously they lighten them up. When you know this happens you will be ready to attack this feature of our mind.
Also they advise to cover canvas first with under painting like somewhat we did today and then go to detailing leaving very light values to the very end. Why to cover it is because on white any dark value looks darker than it is. This is where that fear kicks in and we try to add white.
Dear Sunnylady, thanks for your cheers and advice, always welcome!
Five seconds after I saw this box in the warehouse, I knew I wanted to paint a 'Bob Ross' on it. 30 seconds later, I knew it would fit my paint tubes!!
Nobody knows this but I managed to darken it a little after all the foliage and bushes were done. As my wife stated afterwards: 'It's a lot better now'. So I believe her!
But I did follow Bob all the way though. Maybe it's because I used a black oval iso a white one like Bob did.
Anyway, I have future similar projects in mind so will certainly keep this advice in mind. Thank you!!
I am always excited when I see your ovals with the black background, I am always impressed with them. I was even more excited to see that this was painted on a box! What a great spot to keep your paints! Better than the boring ol' clear plastic drawers I currently have, for sure.
Thanks for your cheers Heather!
It's a bit odd that Bob only uses a black oval twice in all of his televized creations.
So far I have done four myself since I'm convinced more recreations are suitable for this!
Near summer, I will be able to take the box in use. I can hardly wait!!

Terriffic case box idea. I love it. Great painting too Voy. The trees foliage are very 3d. They pop out of the painting. Very nicely painted.
Helo LJM! Yes, it is not a small box and thus felt really motivated with the given space and freedom!
Recently discovered on making trees and bushes really work, so was very pleased to put this creation on the wood!
Till next one!
