Distant Hills

fake_pandas 10 Mar 2023

The first painting I ever did in the wet on wet style, and also my first oil painting. Way too much liquid white on this, and I had no idea how to use the knife for the cliff and tree. I used way too small of a canvas for this as well, about 6x9 inches, well trying to use a one inch brush. This painting seemed easy so I jumped in the deep end and I learned a lot!

Step 1 is applying liquid whit correctly - let's work on that first:

You need very little liquid white. It should be applied so thin that if you gently touch your fingertips to the painting, you should clearly see the ridges on your fingertips, like a fingerprint. You can wipe off excess with a paper towel if needed. After a few paintings you will be able to 'feel' that you have the right amount of liquid white because the brush will start to 'stick' as you pull it across he canvas.

Keep at it - you will be surprised at how fast you will improve with practice.

Note.... If using liquid white on canvas boards (as i do) you will need more than if using a stretched canvas..as boards soak up the LW . .Keep at it FP.......Welcome to Two inch brush!
