Oil on canvas | 8”x10” | This painting definitely pushed me to think differently about lighting. Thanks to Sunnylady for asking me good questions to work through this with my underpainting. The light source is behind the barn but the lightness of the sandy ground on the front right actually reflected a lot of light onto the right side of the barn, making it the brightest visible side.
Thank you! It was a really good exercise and pushed me outside of my comfort zone.
Great texture on the barn to show wooden structure. Yeah, lighting was a challenge surely and you figured it out I guess. I hope you are okay and not too stressed for being outside your comfort zone. Painting from photo stresses me out as well. I think you gave me a nice idea to go out of my comfort zone too.
Thank you! I enjoy the challenge of working outside my comfort zone. It has its stresses but overall, I feel more fulfilled when the product turns out moderately similar to what I'm envisioning in my head.
Nice work MB, interesting that you chose a flat brush for the trees....makes for an interesting composition....but the barn's the star here!
Thank you! I tend to prefer the blockiness of the flat. It’s square edges remind me of a knife, but still gives me a lot more flexibility than a knife. I did contemplate using a round for the trees but opted for the flat at the last minute.

Well Micah, you kept the promise and struck gold with this one!
Building's perspective is about perfect and you kept the lighting in tight control!
