Plateaus of serenity

mbbrickner 03 Dec 2021

Oil on canvas | 8”x10” | This is a study from a photo somewhere in Arizona. For awhile, I took a break from using a liquid white couch on my canvas, but I’ve recently picked it back up. I’m mixing my own “liquid white” from Gamblin’s solvent-free fluid and zinc white. I really like the semi-opaque nature of zinc white compared to titanium white. I feel like the colors I put on top of it are able to show better with zinc.

Excellent work. Thank you for the tip on a different liquid white!

You have captured that scenery very well. Sunnylady recently gave me the same tip on ZW, and I now have a tube to use when next required.

Thanks, Jwalker and DaveJ! Yes, Sunnylady mentioned that she uses two kinds of white with gouache. I didn't quite understand at first why, but once I started reading more about zinc, I was really intrigued. There are times that I still want titanium, but in general, I've found zinc to be much more versatile on my palette. It's not exactly like flake (lead) white, but definitely gives more of that effect.
