Oil on paper | 9”x12” | I primed a piece of watercolor paper with tinted acrylic gesso and then used water-mixable oils. This is a painting of my in-laws’ house.
Thanks! I started using watercolor paper with oils as it’s more economical. I don’t always use paper, but I like to use it more as a “practice” support. When I use oil on paper, I often tape the paper to a firm surface like a piece of board or an adjustable metal tabletop easel. Using water-mixable oil paints allows me to create thin washes (without solvent) that actually dry pretty quickly. And since I painted this over a week in short sessions each time, it allowed the paint to dry enough between each layer to not smear it. I don’t always use water-mixable oils but I really enjoy them for practice.
Beautiful... the house and setting are lovely!
Thank you!
NICE LIL HOME!
Thank you!
Such a nice impressionistic feel, mbbrickner, and at the same time high level of details on the house to make it focal point. Great job, i really enjoy looking at that house.
Thanks! Yes it can be a challenge knowing how much or how little detail to give with an impressionist piece. That’s where I think the value contrast matters so much. I can do less with detail work if my value contrasts are relatively accurate.

I never thought about painting on watercolor paper! Did you have to paint it on a flat surface like you normally do with watercolors? I imagine that would be challenging with oils which don’t dry quickly - I would probably accidentally smoosh it all with my hand. Your in laws have a lovely place. Looks very pretty and secluded.
