Watercolor on paper | 9"x12" | I have recently been drawn back to watercolor. I am learning that my "style" seems to be a combination of both architectural and natural landscapes together. I love how watercolor lends itself so well to both of those aspects of landscape painting and I think this medium is forcing me to hone my drawing skills and value budgeting (which also makes me a better oil painter!)
This is based on a photo I took the other day. I walk past this house nearly every weekday during my lunch break. The tree to the left background with the strongly angled trunk is a magnolia tree. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the tree bloom this season. However, this past week, I was particularly drawn to the rhododendron on the right. If I could have done anything differently, I might have started with the rhododendron (instead of waiting until the end) in order to get brighter, transparent pinks for the flowers.
Thank you! Yes, I have started to sketch in graphite before adding watercolor. I also lightly sketch with oil painting, just to help create general shape compositions. When I sketch with watercolor, I start lightly with a 4H pencil and I use a kneaded gum eraser to pull away excess graphite and just leave the indication of the shape. If I'm doing line-and-wash, I'll use a plastic nib ink pen to outline the focal points (like a building).
Great watercolor! The building is super! Indeed, drawing helps all the mediums painting as this is the structural support of entire artistic idea.
Thank you! Drawing can be really boring for me. I'd rather just start throwing paint all over the canvas (or paper). But when I started getting more serious about drawing (and doodling in my free time) it has helped me better think about composition.
LOVELY COLORS HERE.WOULDNT MINDE CALLING IT HOME AT ALL.CHEERS.P
Thank you! I was pleased with how well the sienna provided contrast to the greens.

This is beautiful! Iām really impressed with your houses. Do you sketch in advance? Really well done :)
