Watercolor on paper | 9”x12” | What I love about watercolor is how much it requires me to think about composition before I start the painting process. I often sketch out the basic shapes in a light earthy pigment like yellow ochre or burnt sienna. Then, sticking with just this one color, I’m able to better identify value levels for various places so I can budget my white/light space accordingly. Admittedly, I still find myself thinking like an oil painter hoping I can cover over the darker colors with white. I also felt like this painting needs a pop of color so I added alizarin crimson to the background tree in the middle.
Thanks!

Love the reflection of the color pop.
