Splendor of Autumn

Plainshow 02 Nov 2020

My first attempt at oils. I was trying with discount paints and brushes. Getting the hang of some techniques was made harder by not knowing if the brush, paint or painter was the problem, and that was frustrating. the foreground was my biggest worry, but also where I felt I was able to begin to grasp some of Bob's techniques quicker. Just by looking at the gold and red shrubs on the right (painted first) versus the ones on the left, and I was starting to show improvement. I've invested in some better supplies and look forward to my second attempt.

If you have artistic quality paints even with discount they will work. Student grade is alright too, but school grade paints will create a lot of problems mainly due to the smallest amount o pigment and a lot of additives.

It seems that your pigments are not bad at all. Yellow is bright. Consistency is something you may want to check.

Anyway what i should have told first: Welcome to oil painting world and get ready for amazing adventures. You have a good start and practice will help you to improve with time as we all started some day and keep learning and improving ourselves as painters.

Also I need to add that Bob techniques are not easy, but you will learn. I suggest to watch Bill Alexander 1 hour long videos with Diane Andre on youtube channel as she explains a lot why things are done this or that way.

There is only one 1 hour video from Bob that is available for free and it is not enough for starters.

Get your bravery and get ready to learn! This is fantastic world of oil painting!

Voy Kay Conqueror of Challenges

Practice and equipment will pay off, no worries!

Happy painting!

Welcome! Great job for your first try with oils!

I really like the trees in the distance. They remind me of the swamp!
