Valley View

KerriG 15 Jul 2024

Worked on this one over the weekend; reminded me of a scene from my recent trip to Alaska! I struggled with the lake reflection; perhaps I used too much titanium white? I layered a mixture of green and brown over black gesso on the bottom (as per Bob's video) before painting on the white, but had no other medium on the bottom part (perhaps I should've layered some liquid clear over the dried black gesso before applying the green and brown)? If anyone might have some pointers on this, I'd sure appreciate your insight.
Otherwise, I had fun challenging myself with this one, and the rocky cliffs were super fun to make. I tried using the oval brush to make the huge tree on the right, but wasn't so successful at it, so I switched back to the good old fan brush. Great practice for me with this one on many elements.

Nice work. I always use LC on the entire canvas when working on a black canvas. Seems to work for me.

Thank you so much Cronenberg89 for the insight; I will follow this advice on my next attempt!

The rest of your painting is great, and I also use liquid clear on the entire canvas.

Brilliant mountain. Yes VERY thin coat of liquid clear. And no pressure when blending your reflections.

Thank you so much everyone 🙂

Awesome painting! I love it. I agree, liquid clear all over. Thin coat.

The mountain, tree, and rock highlighting are spot on--well done. And I love the lone bird!
Less of the Ti white and no pressure would have allowed more dark to show in the water.
Liquid clear can make it tough to get good reflections if you get too much LC on the canvas, but I like it, too, and agree that it could be used prior to adding some green/brown oils. Key is the really light touch when applying the Ti white and using a clean, dry brush to go across.

Thank you stephirae and jlstutz98 for your valuable advice 😊
