I ended up liking the dark, rocky foreground, so decided to keep it that way, but then I couldn't really justify the foreground tree. It just didn't seem like terrain sufficient for a semi-mature tree to grow. I'm no arborist; that was just my feeling, so I left it out. This may have been a mistake..

I like your decision to omit a foreground tree. The rocky foreground alone is interesting and complements the bright focal point of the waterfall and stream.
Not a mistake at all. A dead tree would be fitting, not a full one. I just love this version!
