I tried this painting with the canvas oriented vertically. I feel like I should have done it horizontally, as the actual painting area (excluding the woodgrain and black border) was too narrow. I think I will try to do this one again in the future, but orient the canvas the other way.

This is really nice Chris. Your woodgrain is awesome!! It looks like a nice expensive exotic hardwood.
A couple of ideas:
Maybe a smaller band of wood and border at the top and bottom instead and leave out the wood and border on sides, leaving painting in portrait mode.
Another idea would be a 1.5" or so woodgrain border on the whole painting, making it look like it is framed.
