I always scrape out the shape of the cabin or whatever before I paint it. It does come in handy to know what it will look like, as well as it not being the muddy mess.

Bob has two ways of making structures. One is to scratch out a basic shape using the pallet knife, and the other is to just paint over what is currently on the canvas. Somehow he seems to make that work, but I have found when I try to paint a structure over background paint, it just turns into a muddy mess. Scratching out the shape of the structure with the pallet knife removes all that excess paint and makes it a lot easier to paint the building. It also gives you a sense of what the building will look like before you commit to putting paint on canvas. Just putting in my two cents.
