I did this as a practice piece which ended up evolving ;) I used safflower oil for the glazing and quite a bit of the detail work. I like how it works but it's SLOW drying.
I liked glazing with stand linseed oil. It dries fairly quickly. It is supposed to yellow less than normal one.
I never tried safflower oil. But it must be fantastic for seascapes and surely does not yellow.
How long does it take to dry in glazing layers?
Really lovely! and love the moss on the trees!
love the foreground tree particularly .. great job
What a beautiful tree!
Pretty scene! Great job on that moss.
@sunnylady - I normally use stand oil or a medium I've mixed up myself but I noticed it dried too fast for some of my work like this. I had read about safflower oil and wanted to try it.. it's slooooooow drying.. I have some walnut oil to try next. What I will is safflower oil makes a very creamy paint.. more so than linseed oil which stays a bit stiffer. The safflower oil is very "fat" so it sticks well on top of a layer of lean paint. I did the tree completely using safflower oil and didnt have any mud issues.
@wybnormal - thank you very much! I guess I understood what you say about creamy consistency of paint.
I had to refresh my knowledge and found this good article about drying oils: http://www.cad-red.com/mt2/oil.html

Very nice work. I did one with a glaze using bobs liquid clear 2 years ago and it's still a bit tacky.
