I did this one twice. The first one was spot on and I went back to darken some of the side trees and messed it up. Things got worse and worse and finally I gave up, scraped it all off and started over. This second one is not nearly as good. My trees got muddy and because of the scrape off, the water reflections didn’t work as well. Oh well. I learned a lot.
For paintings that are almost only painted tone on tone, I think it is to create the most important contrast to create ,depth and distance. The second is to be careful not to overdraw the proportions foreground/background. Just make a good balance. 👍🏼🇩🇪that's just my approach
Beautiful reflections
This painting is a bravery test in itself. Wondering what brand paint did you use?

The trees, bushes, and reflections still look good in V2, Bob. (I watched BA do this after seeing yours.) I frequently need a mulligan on at least part of a painting. After much wailing and/or whining, I wipe an "affected area" clean with mineral spirits/paper towel, then reintroduce the base layer (here, Indian yellow) and go from there. Sometimes, that works, sometimes not! Having the right viscosity of the reapplied paint seems to be key. As you mentioned, the main thing is to learn from our efforts at something new.
