Original Creation

Spring Flowering Trees - Kevin Hill

joha59 19 Oct 2026

More then a week ago I started this painting, following a tutorial (not real time) of Kevin and it was different. A medium of gel and white paint for the 2/3 upper part (I used just liquid white), none on the lower part (so did I). This underground makes this painting suitable for painting in more sessions. The mountains were done with the brush, the highlights after wiping away all underlaying paint. The same for the trees. The underlaying color was totally removed with the towel. That's the trick of Kevin for getting better highlights. For the leaves and flowers he used the so called 'comma-stroke'. Hundreds of these painting movements, very hard for impatient painters like me lol. First in green and yellow and white, then in red and white, with some tints of blue and yellow. Using many differents colors makes it look better, according Kevin. Finally the foreground and the path I did today to complete the painting. I think this painting will be easier using acrylics, maybe I will try that later. This painting gave me the feeling of painting with acrylics and it confirmed me again that painting is nothing more then creating an illusion of the real world and just like a real illusionist I have to believe in my 'trick' to create a convincing painting. This time I did it on wallpaper of 40 x 30 cm. There are more and maybe better versions of this painting on this site, here is the link for the tutorial, if you want to give it a try: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzdWWtl0JfA

Ooof. I think I'd be too impatient for this as well. Good job on persevering. It made for a beautiful effect. I love the grasses around the fence posts. Really well done.

I really like this painting, great job! I've used his methods when I paint photos, and have my eye on several of his paintings to try soon. It takes a bit more time, but I think it is worth it. You have excellent colors and detail textures here, very nice job!

I love to watch Kevin paint and I've been wanting to do this one for the longest time. You did a great job Jos, I particularly like how the foreground turned out. Inspiring!

Fabulous!

Thank you very much Tawny, Larry (looking forward to your Kevin Hill painting(s)), Helen (still waiting for your version!) and Sandy!

Beautiful painting Jos! What an accomplishment. Seems you’ve taken your work to a whole new level. I can’t imagine the time that went into this one and the outcome is awesome. I also very much liked what you wrote about creating an illusion and delivering as the illusionist. Very inspiring. Well done!

Thank you Dan for your friendly words, as usual!
