Original Creation

Sunset Glow - A.D. Greer

joha59 22 Jul 2024

Taken from a picture of a painting, I do not know the painter or the title (on 24 july I did another search and found the original: it is: Sunset Glow from A.D.Greer), so I became the painter of a reproduction and gave it a name (and changed it in the meantime). When it was just finished this morning, I did not like the result, the sky was too light in my idea, but the more I look at it, the more I like it and during the drying proces the colors seems to flow in each other, on wallpaper 40 x 30 cm.

It's beautiful. The brushwork on the tops of your tall trees is very effective. Sky looks great to me. I think sometimes we set out to make something look exactly how we think it should be and we forget with wet on wet it all happens on the canvas like it has a mind of its own. I'm still amazed you can paint like this on paper and I don't know if this would work for you on paper but I was once creating a sky on a fairly smooth canvas and I didn't like the result so I've rubbed it off leaving a stain behind in whatever tooth there was. In my mind, the stain looked fabulous, way better than what I was trying to create in the first place! Stains are something you can work with and can be very effective especially when painting a sky for colour variation and distance. I get excited when something like that happens. I'll put it up when its finished. Also you did great copying from a photo, it can be challenging.

Thank you very much Sandy, Cold, Bob, Dirk and Helen.
Helen: I covered the paper with two layers of white gesso with a roller, so it's not completely smooth, it has some texture and yes, I can imagine that for skies stains can be very useful, curious about your current peace of art!

Awesome job. The depth is superb and I like the colors.

That is a gorgeous sky and I love the trees! Such a tranquil scene; wish I could hop in there and sit a spell 😌

wow! this is one of my favorites from you :D

Thank you Tom, Kerri and Jeff for your nice comments, happy with it!

Nice painting, great colors.

Thank you Yucel!

I keep looking at this. The style is familiar, and I wouldn't bet my house on it but could be after Viktor Yushkevich. I did his "sunny morning" and it was a real joy. It's worth checking him out for scenes like this, he does some amazing skies. He's pretty amazing all round actually. He's an acrylic painter so you have to adjust a bit when using oils but the sentiment is still there.

Helen; I have searched on google and found the original: it is Sunset Glow from A.D.Greer, you can find it on ebay and buy it for $200, the photo where I based my painting on was just a part of the painting I discovered now.
