Original Creation

Wheat field

jimbop 13 Aug 2023

This is my third painting that I've done without any tutorials, and only with photos I or family has taken.

Not much to say about this honestly, I think it's acceptable, but definitely I need more practice with everything. It feels pretty empty and needs more definition. It is too wet and needs more work. Criticism would be appreciated.

This was painted on 38x46cm canvas.

Thank you.

Very impressive for being your third painting well done! A couple suggestions that would make this pop:

add some dark to the bottom of the trees that blend up while keeping your highlights. Suggest brown and green and blue varied together. With darker base on the foreground tree. Just the base blended up.

Next I would blend the sky a little more to remove the textures. Textures (thickness of paint that stand out) suggest something up close. This will push the clouds further into the distance. You might add a few slight color variations while keeping your brightest spots in the clouds pure. Such as more blues, grays etc blended together.

I would then add some ochre, and variations of green with slight red and brown in spots to vary the colors of the grass here and there. If you use more red add it up front as red is for the foreground. Adding color variations to your grass etc

Next I would add dark grass up front (and taller) brown, black, green touch of red and blue. Dark mixture up front. This would create more depth and push things back a bit.

You also might add a few subtle highlights to the areas of the trees getting hit by the sun.

These are just suggestions and again very well done especially for just your third painting. Asking for critical advice is difficult and sometimes it’s difficult to offer it. Those are the changes I would make.

Hope that helps.

Nice.

I love this painting. You really captured the light and tone of the scene without getting hung up overworking details. I could learn something from your approach! Nice work!

It is beautiful

This looks great my friend! The softness in it makes it very soothing.

A little tip for you… A wheat field need some wheats to look at. I would do that at the very bottom of the canvas. Make just a few with the wheat head. The viewer will then see a whole field filled with wheat. Also, put different shades of golden colors in your field to give more realism. Imho, this should elevate your painting to the next level. 😀

Well done overall!

Thank you very much Daniel, I will definitely follow these advices. And thank you for explaining everything so thoroughly!

Thank you abha!

Thank you for your words dracula! I am very glad that you like it!!

Thank you Coldethel!

Thank you Nancy! I will do that next time doing something similar. More colours is definitely something I need in the field just like Daniel said earlier. Thank you very much !!

Thank you Tom! Glad you like it!

I like how a bit rough it looks and atmosphere it has. My 5 cents would be to touch nothing but to cut with scissors half of the wheat field and reframe after that.
This painting is great in creating the atmosphere and I think it does work as it is. Only compositional adjustment would be a good thing to do which will add on the feeling of atmosphere.
