I am currently in physical therapy/rest for my shoulder/bicep tendonitis (in my dominant arm of course) that has reemerged after 5 years 😠, but slowly improving. I took my time away from painting, to watch some videos and find new artists and inspirations for painting. The result of that inspiration is the final stage of this painting. I thought it would be a neat idea to post the different stages I go through, and explain my process as I go along. Stay tuned for posts 2-6 to see the final result!
My search lead my artist Buck Paulson (seen on Alexander art/Bill Alexander) Some of his paintings from that series are on my list to do in the future, but the inspiration for THIS painting came from a 2 part (found on YouTube) from his streaming video with Alexander art sometime during covid 19 lockdown (2020?) See the snapshots uploaded here.
I immediately knew I wanted to try this, AND I wanted to use my Pitbull (Waffle), whose markings are just like the pinto horse, as the subject instead of the horse. I am also uploading a photo of her. I did change the orientation of her head so that she was looking more straight ahead and not toward the camera.
Now that I had the inspiration for the painting -
STEP #1 - was to do the "splash" ***ACRYLIC*** base coat by wetting the canvas with some water Next I applied some red, yellow and blue paint in blobs and used a palette knife to loosely spread it around. Next, spray again with quite a bit of water and tilt and move the canvas around to create drips and shapes etc. until you like the result. Lay flat to dry.
After it was dry, I drew the picture of my doggie using pencil, and using white acrylic, painted her white areas, leaving her brown patches with just the background showing through. I know I want the composition to be a path coming through trees on the left and right with the sunlight shining through the middle.
I already know that this background is waaaayyy too bright for my personal taste, so when I start the oils, I will definitely be toning it down.
So ends STEP #1 in the process. I hope you enjoy the way I am posting in stages instead of just the final product. I would love for you to learn through the journey of this one with me.
I saw the video, an interesting process of preparation. That looks good so far. Buck has also painted very beautiful seascapes , but even there he often has a different approach than Bill. Such a kind of sketching. . Get well soon!👊🏼😎
Thank you Tom! It does go through quite a change along the way.
Thank you Dirk! I think I have watched every Buck video I could find lol! Yes, his style is so different, but I find it to be much like my own and easy for me to connect with. I picked his seascape "point conception" for my list to do in 2023. I did also like his Bierstadt seascape, but I only wanted to do 1 seascape (they are not my 1st choice) and since I already did a study piece on Bierstadt (posted here on TIB -kern river valley) I went with the other one. I also put his painting "imagination" on my to do list.
This looks awesome so far! Love the idea of posting in stages! Feel better soon!
Get well soon! Missing you here.
Thank you Sandy! I feel about 50% right now and I have been able to paint about 1x per week for around 30-60 minutes. I completed step #5 yesterday and hopefully finish it next week.
Thank you Sunnylady, that is kind of you to say!
Welcome back Pam, we have missed your wonderful paintings!
This is a funny thing , Pam . I have seen Point Conception yesterday . I like the colour range totally . I Had never done a seascape until yet because its Not my first choice to paint but i picked one of Bills to try .I think it's very time-consuming .Today i have watsched 2 Videos from justin ( painting with Justin ) a very cool Artist
Thank you so much Jos! All of you posted soooo many wonderful paintings whilst I was absent.
Dirk, I think the colors are the reason I like it as well. I had only done a few of Bob's seascapes before painting Bill's sunset seascape. Are you referring to that one? It is so much fun, you will really like it. I have heard of painting with Justin but not watched him yet. Will have to check it out!
Yes Pam , thats it . I like these „Killer skies“,you have seen it .Justin Wozniak had to struggle very hard with depression and found a way to deal with it through painting. I can only recommend his videos. His style is cool, informative and educational. I like him and will paint something of him in the future
Get well soon Pam. We will keep our eyes peeled for your progress posts!
Incredibly beautiful! I loooove the colors!! Fantastic work Pam!!
that's a beautiful dog
Thank you brian. Stay tuned
Thank you Nancy. Those bright colors do disappear in the next step. Sorry to disappoint LOL. The bright colors are not my personal taste and since this is my dog, and to be hung in my home, I made it more to my liking. But I may do another one of these sometime with a different animal and use brighter colors.
Thank you so much Felix. She is actually a rescue dog that we adopted from the local Humane Society on 2-22-22 ( or 22-2-22) 😀 the shelter's name for her was Emma Watson lol! Because of her eyebrow. But we renamed her Waffle.
I like where you’re going with this. Under painting is often overlooked in importance. Will have to search for the video, would enjoy watching it I’m sure. I love Buck Paulson probably my fav artist :)
