nice doggie..i miss our Rotties!

Fabulous. I bet the owner loves this painting. I've always wanted to paint our doggies in oils, but I wouldn't know where to start. Can you point me in the right direction please?

Very nice doggie (and grass) Pam!

Thanks a bunch everyone!!

TLP - So I first start with a sketch/drawing/tracing (YES a tracing lol!) of the basic animal shape, face, especially eyes and nose placement with some detail. Next (also look at @ninoum portrait of her doggie. she took BR animal class, so she might have good advice as well) I block in the entire painting with black gesso + watering it down for the lighter areas, and leaving the brightest areas white canvas. This is more easily done if you change your photo to black and white to view only the light and shadow details. When I begin my painting in oil, I start with the eyes and nose and work out from there. If you have ever done a gesso underpainting for landscapes, you will know that this is a big help before the oils!

Thank you!
