This is amazing Pam.
Wow! This is gorgeous Pam! How did do learn to do animals? Many people are asking me to do painting of their pets and I am so lost when it comes down to this still-life style.
Thank you so much everyone for your wonderful comments!
Nancy - I have had so many people ask me this same question. I know this answer will sound "hokey", but the pet portraits just come naturally out of me without the "effort" I put into my landscapes. So although I feel it is a "gift" for me, I do have some tips/methods to share with those who are interested.
I DO draw a simple sketch before painting, and I am not ashamed to admit that I use a light box tracing technique for that. Mostly, eyes, nose, ears and proportions.
The EYES are the single most important element. I usually start with the eyes and blocking in the black areas. Most of my steps revolve around blocking in colors for the first few steps. See my painting on here titled "Brown Horse". I uploaded stages pictures and a more detailed description. There are a LOT of different tutorials and opinions on animal techniques and I can see merit in most of them. I would recommend looking at YouTube user "STUDIO WILDLIFE", as I feel his techniques are close to mine and he is a terrific teacher.
Very nice Pam, the face looks like a photograph.
Thank you Tony!
