This is a study after a painting called "Winter" by Alexei Savrasov. I really love his style. I had originally planned to approach this painting in a faster, looser style than usual, but instead found myself using an itty-bitty, ultra-fine script liner to make tiny branches, shrubs, and little buildings in the distance along the horizon. I guess I'm glad that there are rewards for close viewing.
Phenomenal depth!! I would love to see this up close.
Froggie, I am with you on this. I'd love to see it up close.
You found a great artist. Amazing!
love the colours and texture ... lovely painting and style ... love the snow and sky .. i am thinking about doing a snow painting soon .. good job !!
Thanks for sharing close up shots!
I do not see texture of the canvas. Do you use portrait grade canvas? Do you add more layers of gesso? or there is just a thicker paint layer to create this stunning sky?
@SunnyLady, this painting is done on a relatively smooth gessoed panel, so there wasn't much texture to start with.
When I use those types of panels I almost always struggle with adhesion in spots on the first pass, so I usually prepare the panels with a sticky mix of Burnt Umber, Raw Sienna, and Maroger medium which gives the surface enough grip to accept those initial paint layers.
Thank you Dracula! I do not recall I have seen such smooth texture before in the store. I will pay more attention now on.
