This is my new Bill Alexander recreation. I had planned to do this for a while. It is a 45 minute episode which took me 3 hours to finish.
This episode seemed to be perfect to get more loose with oils. A goal I have since longer. I want to get at the level of Pam aka flippergirl who has some amazing recreations done from Bill. So I didnβt try to overthink several parts and just follow wherever the brush takes me. Not easy for me.
A complex episode and the bit confusing camera work makes it even more complex to follow. However I am really pleased with the outcome. Especially with the rock on the left side and the movement created in the whole scene.
Oils on canvas panel 20 x 28 in (50 x 70 cm)
Thanks Jos, you are definitely right. Yet I would call this the most difficult episode by Bill I recreated.
Super nice work, Tom. I think this picture goes in the direction that reminds of Buck ππΌπ©πͺπ¦πΉ
Thank you Dirk! I think Bill influenced the work of Buck a lot.
Beautiful Tom. You captured the action of the sky and water beautifully.
Excellent!,
Thank you Tomi. Glad you like it!
Thank you Cold!
Wow and can you imagine being on that water?
Thank you Brian, definitely not the weather I would go out there π
Beautiful stormy seas and sky! Love it!
Thank you Sandy!
Incredibly beautiful Tom! That movement/energy in that ocean is top! I love how you see a lighter color at the top part of your waves. That compo is a winner for sure!
Thank you Nancy! This is definitely a challenge to do.
First, Tom, thanks for the huge compliment π This creation is fantastic! There is a lot of movement you captured for sure. Bill is definitely more loose style than Bob. When I first watched him, it seemed so haphazard and crazy! It was hard for me to "let go" and be loose. Long handled brushes are good for being more relaxed with the strokes. A great stormy seascape!
Many thanks Pam. I agree 100 % with you regarding the loose style of Bill. As you know I am coming from watercolors, there you can be loose more easily. But with oils it is tough. I have tried exactly the same you said. I am glad I could manage it in your eyes!
what colors were used in this painting?
@jimbop: Alizarin Crimson, Phatalo Green, Van Dyke Brown, cad yellow, Cad Red and white.
You can also check the tutorial by Bill Alexander, it is available on YouTube under the provided title.
thank you, keep up the great work ππ
Thanks jimbop. Cad Yellow and Cad red where only used very rarely here. I think the red only as part of the rock highlights and the yellow only for the yellowish glow in the center of the water.

Very nice Tom, is much more difficult to do then expected, was my experience.
