"Reflections"
April 24, 2022
Oil on canvas
50x65cm
Based on photographs I took along a canal.
Another experiment with reflecting trees in still water.
I spent a ton of time on the trees, which I made almost completely with the knife, the rest was way easier. LOL!
It did not come out the way I imagined, but oh well.
Might try it again some day.
It shows trees were taking a lot of hard work from you. They look a bit stiff. (No offense meant). I think trees are the hardest thing to paint especially from photo because brain wants to paint every single branch that would not have been painted if plein-air. There is great book - John Carlson - about landscape painting and he gives absolutely fantastic advice on trees. Which has a lot of sense and logic but never would occur in the amateur head. I tried to implement it in my latest painting but somewhat failed it anyway.
I agree with your comment regarding the trees. They do indeed look stiff. And stiffer than my other trees I think. I made these using mostly the knife which resulted in more straight limbs. Perhaps that's part of the issue in this case. It is one of the things I'm not very happy about in this painting.
Decided to show it anyway because I still like the idea.
Would that be John Fabian Carlson, a Swedish painter who immigrated to the US when he was stil a kid?
What's the title of the book?
As for painting trees: I'm also working on a painting where I've been painting the space in between the limbs and trunks instead of only the tree itself. Gives a totally different feel and look to it all.

I missed the trees were done with the knife before. I think you are right about more straight lines coz of knife.
I will be looking forward to see your next painting which you do through negative space. I have never tried it that way. I only sometimes do sky holes with this approach.
If you find a book or source about painting the trees , please do share. I am struggling with the trees and try to figure out how to paint them better.
@ Sunnylady - Thank you for that link! I've added it to my wishlist on a local site that also sells it. <3
Yes, if I find something, I'll share. <3
