Finally I did it! This was my idea for previous Event. I chickened out. But after a wonderful inspirational classical music 2 days ago I finally did my study piece.
In terms of learning: very limited pallet to replicate Monet colors. I researched his pallet for this painting. However I had to use two non-Monet greens that I tried to match in color with what is on the painting and not how they behave in mixing. I think this is why I struggled with making darks. Matching color is a learning curve.
Another point - it is incredibly hard to replicate as the brushwork is totally different. But it certainly taught me to look in details and see more.
Next learning topic is use of broken color. I hope that this new event will help me with that.
I wonder if some other people who attempted to study Monet can share their knowledge.
Oil on canvas board. 40x60cm.
Thank you @Happyisland! I am so happy to hear your encouraging words!
I love Monet. I am sure it is very hard to replicate his work with the sense of immediacy from his brush strokes. I can tell it is in a Monet style and it looks great :)
@rah: thanks a lot. After you said this, i relaized that maybe part of my struggle was the use of the brushes. I used synthetic brushes made of firm hair to replicate hog for sky and color build up and snow. When I came to detailing part I used round natural bristle brushes. Broken color attempts started to work only after initial layers got dryer due to soaking of oil into canvas board, it was 10PM at that time and I decided to leave it as it is and call it done.
This is quite a beautiful rendition. I feel like you did capture the spirit of Moet's style.
@flippergirlpaints-thank you! I have always liked Monet and glad that I took this challenge to learn something new!
I wanted to add that I was unfamiliar with this painting so I had looked it up online and was actually pleasantly surprised how similar yours was. The color palette is so close. Once I remember Bob Ross saying something about it being a good time to have a natural tremor or shake in your hand for a certain technique he was applying. This would be one of those times.
@flippergirlpaints - here’s the link that describes colors. https://colourlex.com/project/monet-lavacourt-under-snow/
I had cad yellow, French ultramarine, cobalt blue, titanium and sink whites, cad red, phtalo green and sap green and added yellow ochre to mix some of the pink-orange tones.
