I was really debating if I should share non standard painting here and decided why not to. Once in a while I have bad days when fighting materials produces quite a mess.
This was my introduction to Liquin original.
I premixed every paint with less than 20% and could not handle those mixtures on canvas. That was quite a lesson to me, it was second canvas I spoiled that day. First one did not progress further than the sketch. This one became full expressionism.
Well now it is a pallet knife painting made out of my head. So pure art.
16*20 inch, canvas, oil paint,Liquin.
Thank you! You are so kind! I think it reflected all the spectrum of my emotions that day in the color scheme :) I just was mushing the paint on the canvas till something came up. Thank you for you support!
I agree with Sandy Sunnylady. Good recovery!
I feel your pain and it is a shame you feel that way. Some lessons are tougher than others, but it sounds like you did take something away from the experience, so was the 2 hours completely wasted? That is for you to decide, of course, but I am sure you won't do it that way again. The final result? The colours in your cityscape are interesting and there is some ambiguity created with the abstract reflections. River or rain soaked pavement? It made me stop and think!
I like it. It makes you stop and examine and look at everything. The viewer can decide what they see. We are our own worst critic. If you enjoyed painting, you learned something, and your viewers like what they see I call that a win! This is my own opinion but if you put a nice frame on it it will sell. I see beauty here :)
Yes, i also understand your frustration, i expect most of us will at some point. If i ever have a "disaster" i don't throw the canvas away, i just cover it with a couple coats of black and use it for a later project.
Whilst it may not be what you set out to paint, even happy big accidents do happen - as viewers are saying. Time to rename your accidental experiment and see what others continue to say. 'Storm (or hurricane) swept city lights' comes to mind.
@rah - thanks for your kind words! There was learning about myself in this process - you are right. Thanks for another perspective about painting!
@Happyisland - thank you ! I am glad it turned that way to stop viewer to examine what is there. I have not thought about that at all. Thanks a lot for seeing beauty in it! It is encouraging!
@tel - thanks my dear, i do not throw canvases either, they are extremely expensive in Guyana. I have two now that i will sand a bit/ or acetone to remove gloss from oil/resin and just paint over it and previous colors will create some visual interest by peaking through. Plus I have a bunch of my old acrylic works that i did at the acrylics beginner class 3-4 years ago that can now be repurposed for oil painting.
@DaveJ - thank you so much! I am glad you mentioned that this one has storm feel. Renaming - is a great idea. I will give it a go.
I can't believe this started out as a mountain scene! Whatever frustration lead to this result was an unrealized gift. Your composition has both chaotic and purposeful elements/strokes and I would have never guessed it was NOT planned. The colors are fabulous, and the warm tones play perfectly against the blues and greens. The pink is unexpected and is where my eye starts the journey! I am not even really a fan of contemporary art personally, but I am wishing I had painted this one!
what mess ! sorry I probably see things differently but I like this style .. very stormy .. love the lights .. well done
@flippergirl - thank you so very much my dear friend, your support is so much appreciated.
I am not a fun of contemporary as well, because my brain does not comprehend how to produce such art. It turns out when emotions overrule something like this can be born. But when I came back to painting mood I stepped back, reassessed composition and added darks to equalize light parts. That pink was something I wanted to preserve out of the mess as color contrast is striking.
Thank you so very much for your kindness and time to comment.
@davidF - thank you David! I guess I did not think that people will like this style, as many of us here are in more classic scenes art. Thank you for giving another perspective! It is very helpful and opens doors to experimentation in more expressive avenue.

I kind of like it! I think it is quite a save from the disaster you experienced! It looks like a rainy evening in a major city!
