Magic sky

Sunnylady 02 Feb 2020

I was inspired by my favorite subject that people have less and less opportunity to see due to light pollution.
I dream about going to the dark site far away from big cities to see these amazing features of the milky way. I dream to go to the southern hemisphere to see the night sky there.

This is based on the photo from Italy, Dolomites. I have not been there and I hope internet did not lie about the location.
Size 16x20 inches on black gesso.

Have you seen Milky way in all its beauty and where?

My goodness Sunnylady, what a true beauty you have given life on a canvas! STunning colors and great scenery. That night sky is just a huge cherry on top of a delicious pie. My applause to you!!

And yes, I have seen the milky way with the naked eye on two occasions. Once on the highway (no lights!) towards Teheran (Iran) where we stopped for a … ahum …. little high-in-need pause in the desert and the milky way was out and clearly visible! The second time, and my most beautiful ever, was in Cabanaconde, Peru, at 2 am. Where at an altitude of over 3.000 meters, I saw not a thousand but a million of stars and the clouds shade of the milky way. Simply breathtaking and so pleased you have captured that immaculate beauty SO WELL!!

Thank you Voy! Thank you very much for sharing your amazing stories, locations are quite unusual and do not sound very touristic, I am glad you took a minute to travel back in time to the night skies!

Your painting is magical! It brings me so much emotion that are difficult to put into words, this canvas is like a dream!
I love the colors so much, you did such a great job at recreating that wonderful scenery that I can't keep my eyes off of it!!
Really inspiring!

Unfortunately I've never seen the Milky Way but it is one of my biggest dream to see it.

Wow!!! Really beautiful painting!! I am inspired to do this one too!

@ Hyunmyy I am sure you dream come true!

I am so happy you feel so many emotions about the painting. This is exactly why we do art to observe our emotions and share them with each other. This is my favorite piece so far and I absolutely love it! I enjoyed the process very much and overcoming challenges was so much easier that way.
@ Madame Mouton : Thank you! All the best with your Milky way. It is a pleasure to paint the night sky!

Romain Master of Portraits

This is magnificient! Congrats Sunnylady!
Your painting really makes me feel humble towards nature and space, with such immenseness.
Truly amazing job with the blends of light and cold colors, well done!

@Romain Nature is incredibly fragile, the seas are our lungs and humanity needs to do every bit we can do not only preserve H2O but life and balance in it. Who knows how soon we can reach another water-full planet and check out if there is life in those oceans and seas.
There is another universe in our oceans and there is whole universe above our heads.
Let the ocean of the stars above our our heads being one of the most beautiful things be there for us for awhile.

Just fantastic!

My first thought before reading the user name was actually "great, another user uploading photographs" 😀

Thank you Felix! I guess you found the original photo. Isn't it beautiful? Have you seen Milky Way in real? I honestly did some of Bob Ross style in here but I had to combine with another wet-on-wet method to achieve the effect in the sky. I also bought a very soft blender brush that Bob used couple of times at all. Softness is very critical here for the sky and for the fog.
I check the painting few times a day because I totally love it and it makes me smile and dream about seeing Milky Way at high altitude somewhere in Chile .

This is beautiful!!

@ RKGal Thank you!

dracula Power Painter

This painting is truly beautiful. You did a magnificent job capturing the Milky Way, which is a spectacular sight indeed!

@Dracula Thank you very much!

Wow, that is gorgeous!

A true inspiration. Really beautifully done. I hope your dreams come true for you. I have been wanting to try something similar to this for a long while. If mine comes out half as well as yours, I will be pleased. It's just gorgeous.

@rovingmichigander Thank you!
@Froggie Thank you! Don't doubt yourself, your painting is going to be amazing! Thanks for support! Try to build up colors slowly don't jump into white, hold on with highlights as long as you can. I did sky first and though it was way too dark and almost reached the blender brush to remove starts and lighten it up, but I had to stop myself. I thought "hold on, canvas is black that is why you think it is very dark. fill the color in for the lower part and do the foggy area and re-assess what is happening in the sky." Honestly it was right decision to take. Finally, last three things I made were the lights of the towns and sunrise.

Oh my gosh, this is amazingly beautiful. Quite inspiring Sunnylady!!!

Superb!

Thank you very much Bob_ross_watercolors and Jin7!
It started to dry and I now feel the need to varnish it to bring brilliance back.

Absolut fantastic painting Sunny, this painting has everything,i love the sky and stars, the colors you used are awaysome,i love it,well done keep going!

Patoex, thank you.
Stars is my passion. I was working on it in my head a while before putting it onto the canvas. I was initially thinking about water color but this is very difficult media for me.

You did a great job on this painting, i love how you painted the stars in the Milky way this painting is trully amazing.

This is stunning. I can't stop looking. . because I am star gazing. Just as Hyunmyy said....magical.

Thank you so very much LJMpaintings! What is your favorite object in the sky?

So many things... It looks real most of all. The angle of the milky way, the 'cloudyness' of it. the orangey reflection area at the bottom. Some of the stars have a glow about them... It is AMAZING! and that is just the sky. There is still the rest of the painting..which is great too. A perspective i have never experienced myself... High on a mountain Over the clouds looking down on a city.

@LJMPaintings: Neither did I, i think it will be great experience. When we went to Big bend I could not stay outside as i was not prepared for the weather at all. But what i saw in that hour of darkness amazed me to the depth of the soul.
I really want to repeat our trip there but this time with my telescope!

The best night sky I've ever seen with the naked eye was from a cruise ship off the coast of Madagascar. The jet black sky was just full of swirling galaxies, it was just unbelievable. You have to see it to believe it. And a week later on the masai mara I was blessed to witness the most beautiful light storm. It was truly stunning. I love a good sky and your painting is just lovely Sunnylady, well done!

@TheLandscapepainter: Thank you very much for your amazing story. Madagascar is in southern hemisphere, I wish to see stars of the southern sky one day. Your experience is amazing! Meteor shower is something unbelievable, I did not experience it in a dark sky, only from my yard. Thank you for sharing your experience!

Thanks for the kind words about my painting!

And here I am again. Had to have another look at this beauty. It's fantastic!!

Thank you Froggie! I coated it with 2 layers of glossy varnish, this brought depth and colors back after drying.

Oh yes..magical and real at the same time. I just love re-visiting this painting of yours too.

LJM, thank you very much for you kind words and for loving this one!

OH wow love this, had to have a look on LJMs recommendation.

Thank you Gary! This is my favorite painting. I have it in front of me when I wake up. Only little problem in the morning is that curtains are closed and this masterpiece requests a lot of sun light to show its beauty. I am thinking to migrate it to my home office.

This is another level, that sky is superb!

I was incredibly inspired about this one. I had a plan for some time, i did not know how to express it till i found the photo on the internet that was so in line with what I imagined in my head. This is how it was born. Thank you for your wonderful feedback, @ MariaLouiseartwork!
