Only still life I had, that's why it is too precious for me. These objects belong to 3 generations of people in family.
Thanks Tom, yes, I am the same, I had to try still life to understand it. It was very interesting expierence. I spend 2 weeks finding things, playing with them, finding some textile from old times, building things together and figuring how they work together. Most scary thing was to fight the fear of glass objects. I had thin glas, 20 years of dust glass, and thick glass. I saw how even within one painting I progressed with the glass. It was a good exersise to learn how to mix colors on the pallet and match to real life.
There are so many ideas recently, but so less time.
The texture of each material is very well expressed.
Great work!
Thanks Jin! Appreciate you kind feedback!
Excellent work @SunnyLady. I think you really captured the different surfaces very effectively. Everything is easily readable with very realistic color choices. I'd also like to mention the wonderful realism of the background fabric; that's no easy task.
I know what you mean about having so many ideas and so little time! :)
Thanks Dracula! I followed guidance of drawmixpaint website about painting realism in wet on wet. There were a lot of valuable advice. I think starting with this painting I started paying more attention to the value. And now I am mastering it step by step. I think about doing one more still life like that and try to find something metal.
The DrawMixPaint guy is here in Austin; I was looking into maybe taking his private lessons, but it's pretty expensive. His videos are really helpful; I like still life painting and would like to do more of it, but I'm in pretty deep with the landscapes right now so maybe in the future!
Did you use his value checker method? On my Twix painting, I checked the color matching by testing colors right on the glossy photo reference I used.
He also uses a really limited (but flexible) palette and does a lot of pre-mixing. Did you pre-mix your colors. They look very natural!
Dracula, I was thinking the same about private class.
I used colors checking, but I do not have tool and I had objects in front of me. So I checked on the brush by comparing with real object. I premixed all the colors pretty much . I liked how easy it was premixing all and then just painting.
I used limited pallet, but I used alizarin instead of the red he used. But it was not that critical due to only one orange object. Color mixing was the most difficult task of the entire painting. Many discoveries happened about the color mixing and real life colors.
It was a challenge. But there was systematic approach and it was very helpful.
The textures you show in each object are very dimensional. I love this still life and the objects that you picked too! I love old cameras.
Thanks!
