I went outside to capture cold winter day. It was minus 14C and sunny. I was after the sun and bright sky. After 30 minutes when my fingers froze and I could not continue longer I decided to stop.I took a photo and went back in the warmth of my studio. I think this way of painting is quite liberating from following videos. Please do not think that I suggest to stop following video, but at some point we should get on our own and with this painting I am doing one more step towards it.
It took me 5 hours approximately.
Oil on canvas panel 40 x 60 cm
Thanks a lot Jayne! I think it is first time I got shadows right. But in fact this is only 3rd painting outside with oils. I hope to improve.
I like this, great job on the lighting, windows and masonry.
I’ve yet to paint out doors, but I totally agree that painting from photos is so much more enjoyable than following video once the basics are mastered.
Hopefully spring will arrive for you soon!
@ForestVue Gallery- you know what i realized with this one, even it is just second in this technique that even 30 minutes lookin at the real thing outside changes perception of the painting. It looked colder and air looked crispier when i blocked in the big shapes outside.
When I came back and continued working from photograph the mood has changed and it does not look very cold now. I wish I could have cold resistant fingers :)
I hope I still preserved some feeling of the cold weather.
About photograph - I envy you in a good way, I feel it is very challenging for me to paint from photo. Overall I think there are many good photos but not all of them fulfill artistic purpose of composition. Even the ones I took over 5 years of having photo-hobby (I thought I had some sort of a talent, but that is way overstated).
I hope that after mastering basics and going with what we like will help us grow further in the Artistic path.
I think you’ve definitely captured the cold via the snow and leafless trees. Painting outside in natural light must be more vivid and ever changing depending on where the sun is. I’ve thought this must make it more difficult unless you’re a very quick painter.
I hear you on the photography 😂. I recently went through my old photos for the last challenge and ended up using the Sedona photo. I find myself searching Google Earth and 500px.com for ideas. That does become the hardest part, finding something appealing to paint!
I believe taking photos of what we find beautiful captures the feeling we have also which could spark inspiration.
The growth you spoke of edges us to try something new, and I’m thankful for this site giving us the ability to share with others and realize this growth process in ourselves and others.
It is only since my discovery of the color mixing charts mentioned before that I feel good about painting from a photo. I do hope you get one. I noticed that Amazon has them but don’t know about your area.
Hm... I think Amazon does not deliver to Russia. I will check if there is something similar in local art stores.
