Windy Crashing Wave • Kevin Hill

Ninoum 28 May 2023

I wanted to try this close up/giant wave from Kevin. Great painting from his collection. But I am not satisfied with this one. If you ever want to do it, the best advice I can give you is to do it in 1 day. Don’t let the paint get dry. This is a wet-on-wet. Rare that the whole canvas is covered completely in Kevin’s paintings. But for blending reasons, it works much better with this composition.

Here is my hiccup… it was 3am and was super tired. I had to let it go so I could get some rest. I stopped right before making my last set of highlights on my foam pattern. When I tried earlier… disaster on canvas!!! The paint does not flow, glide & blend anymore. So I ended up with these crappy “foam veins”. 🙁 I have attached Kevin’s painting to show you how it was supposed to look like.

Nonetheless, it was a great learning experience. I could possibly touch it up in about a week. But for now, I just have to walk away from it and move forward.

Nancy you sound really upset with yourself. I think it's a beautiful painting even with your foam veins. Can I suggest picking up some blending/glazing medium? It thins the paint on your brush and will also loosen partially dried paint making blending possible again. You could probably still try it on this painting. Instructions say the painting should be totally dry before uses. I found it to be a great helper with day old paintings in progress.

You are awesome Tomi! Thank you. I am annoyed with the process. I could only do the best I could in that situation. I will def have to use the blending medium. But I’ll get it done right. Thank you again for the advice anpep talk! 😎

It is cool!

N it looks intentional to me! I love it!

Looks good Nancy. 2 ways to blend in next layer if previous layer has gone dry. 1 is to redcoat the previously done area in that colour and then apply and blend in the next layer. 2ndly you can just apply the next layer and then put about 2mm width of dots of mixture of previous layer and new layer to blend the edges together. I run into that quite a bit with MJS technique and Michael also does on occasions especially when using his faster drying alkyd oil paints. Have a go on a practice piece. beats pushing your self and making mistakes when tired. You can just stop at any stage you want, Cheers

Looks beautiful and I'm sure you'll tweak it to perfection!

Thank you Cold!

Thank you B! The actual outcome looks very similar to the way I had it before attempting the failed highlights. It’s intentional but not with the expected results.

Thank you so so much for those tips Dave. 😀 I will def try one of your tip! I will repost the outcome when I do!

Thank you for the compliment and believing in my abilities Sandy! 😊☀️

Bonjour my friend, I think you did a good job even if you are not satisfied. The painting looks good. How long have you been working on it?🇩🇪👍🏼

fantastic wave Nancy!me loves it..he he

Awesome work. But I did not expect less from you:)

Thank you my friend! 🇩🇪☀️ I worked on it for 15 hours (2 days). I would have gotten it perfect if I didn't have to go to bed. I was tempted to put liquid clear on but it so slippery for Kevin's compo. I will wait and do 1 of the 2 tips Dave gave me above. This current version looks like right before I was about to put my highlights. So nothing is lost.

Grazie P!! You being a seascape master, I thought you might appreciate this one! 😉

Thank you Tom! 😊 Other than the highlights missing, I like my painting. I will get it right! There will be no "well define" foam lines like we see here. Now I know that if a section has some liquid white/clear on it, it needs to be painted in the same session. It can not wait the next day.
