Vasily Arkhipov (1926 - 1998) was a Soviet Navy officer who played a crucial role during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. As a senior officer on the Soviet submarine B-59, he opposed launching a nuclear torpedo despite intense pressure.
Therefore, he helped to prevent a potential nuclear conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union. His decisive actions are credited with averting a major global catastrophe.
