Stanislav Petrov (1939 - 2017) was a Soviet military officer known for his critical decision during the Cold War. On September 26, 1983, while on duty at a missile early warning center, he received a warning of an incoming U.S. nuclear missile strike.
Judging it to be a false alarm, he chose not to escalate the situation, which could have led to a devastating nuclear war. His actions are credited with preventing a potential catastrophe and highlight the importance of human judgment in moments of crisis. His decision was later recognized and honored as a pivotal act of restraint.
