Saigō Takamori (1828 - 1877) was a prominent Japanese samurai, politician, nobleman and military leader known as the "last true samurai". He played a crucial role in the Meiji Restoration, helping to overthrow the Tokugawa shogunate and modernize Japan.
He also led the Satsuma Rebellion, which was a failed uprising against the Meiji government, and died in the Battle of Shiroyama, either by suicide or being killed. His legacy symbolizes loyalty and honor, making him a national hero in Japan.
