Otto von Bismarck (1815 - 1898) was a XIX century German statesman who served as Prime Minister of Prussia and later as the first Chancellor of the German Empire. As Prime Minister of Prussia and later Chancellor of the German Empire, he used a combination of diplomacy, military strategy, and realpolitik to consolidate numerous independent German states into a single, powerful German Empire under Prussian leadership.
His policies and statecraft, including his complex system of alliances and his strategic wars against Denmark, Austria, and France, significantly reshaped the political landscape of Europe. Bismarck is also known for his domestic policies, such as his social welfare programs, which aimed to appease the working class and undermine the appeal of socialism.
