Alvin York (1887 - 1964) was a U.S. Army soldier who gained fame for his heroic actions during World War I. Born in 1887 in Tennessee, he initially sought to avoid combat due to his pacifist beliefs but served with distinction.
On October 8, 1918, during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, York led a small group in capturing 132 German soldiers and destroying multiple machine gun positions, earning him the Medal of Honor. York's bravery and leadership made him a celebrated figure in American military history.
