The idea for this came from a photo in Arizona Highways magazine. The sky and lightning strike were the hardest part for me. The foreground came together pretty quickly once I got the sky how I wanted it.
I love how you did pink glow around a lightning! this really makes it stand out! Great painting!
and it is thunderstorm now where I am!
I love this! The lightening is really cool! I haven’t seen that in paintings too often. The cacti and foliage in the foreground are also super nice.
Thank you Happyisland for your interest and encouragement. The strike was quite a challenge for me. I used the liner with a thinner paint to get my basic line Then blended with a very small soft pony brush by tapping the edges. I went back with my finest liner with very thin paint and pulled my center of the strike. Hard to see in the photo but there are also very fine bits of lightning at the bottom and top. Just have to play with it until you find that sweet result you are trying to portray. Also... I began with a light Indian yellow white mix and finished with the pure liquid white for definition.
Thank you Sunny lady for your kind comment. The storms here in the desert are beautiful and we so need the rain right now. This is the perfect time of year for this painting as the monsoons are just beginning.
Thank you Karnasnapko. I was hesitant at first try this but excited once I began. It was fun trying to capture the lightning strike. Always looking for new ideas and challenges.
Great stuff Lori! All of the environment is influenced by that strike and you highlighted that very well.
Incredible foreground as well where you created lots of distance with a rather simple but very filled scenery.
Top painting!!
Thanks Voy. Always appreciate your comments. With the dark background I needed the bushes in the front help to bring light through the painting.

This is a great painting. I love storms and especially lightning. I’m probably in the minority on that :)
Do you have any tips for painting lightning like that?
