I might be about to give up on this kind of close animal art. It never turns out the way I want it to. I think I'm better at landscapes, maybe with some animal sillouettes in the distance. I find this style frustrating and not at all relaxing. But it does resemble my black cat Tildy, so there's that. š
My cat gives this look often. We call it his āconcerned faceā. Donāt give up on animal portraits! They can be very fun and a wonderful way to memorialize cherished pets. If you are feeling frustrated I would suggest looking up different artist styles and techniques. Watching Mazart and lachri on YouTube really helped me in the animal department. Mazart used oils so I couldnāt use her technique the same way but some of her tips are universal (etc only use true white very sparingly for highlights even if the animal had white fur). Donāt forget the upside with acrylics - if you donāt like something just wait for it to dry and paint over it some more. There are many paintings that I made that I hated and were hideous in the beginning and I thought would never be good. You just have to paint through the ugly until you like the result!
Lilikins and Voy: thank you for the suggestions and encouragement! Although I said I was done with animal art, some time and distance has made this endeavour less painful. I think I'll take a break and work up the courage to paint a portrait of my doggie. š

Hi Tawny! The cat's expression (frightened almost) is very well present though.
I admit, I could not do such portraits myself, only some black/dark silhouettes so at least, you are far more daredevil then I am with these! šš
Good luck on your next creations, looking forward to them!
