Tornado in SimCity

LadyGalaga 09 May 2023

I’ve been wanting to do this painting for a while and this was the perfect time. This is based on the box art for one of my favorite games growing up, SimCity 1989.

OMG Jessie!!! This is so awesome! I love it! The city and the tornado are so well executed! You got a vote from me!

This is fantastic and so greatly done!

Excellent!

Yikes a tornado in the city! Awesome.

I've been wondering if someone would paint a tornado and how they would do it. Now I know. Great work.

Very cool - excellent execution!

such a cool idea, I love the source material you chose! Masterfully done, I have to know, what technique did you use to do the building windows/lights? So cool.

Thanks everyone! I started with a black canvas, liquid clear, then covered the whole canvas with a mix of vdb and prussian blue for the bluish grey color. the tornado I taped in the white bands with a fan brush. the buildings I blocked in with black and tapped a little white in for the dusty areas. I let the painting dry for a couple days, cut thin strips of masking tape for the vertical areas I wanted to keep dark. For the lights, I used titanium white with a hint of cad yellow and liquid clear, and spread the paint out flat as you would with a cabin, and tapped a tiny bit of that on the edge of the palette knife, and tapped gently horizontally.

Awesome one, Jessie. <3
When I saw the image I immediately wondered if you had done the windows with the knife. And yep, you did indeed.

yup! I love that I can take techniques I've learned from Bob and apply them to other things!
