Two Lighthouses

LJMpaintings 28 Sep 2021

Two different lighthouses,
Two different types of papers
Two different expectations,
Two different outcomes.
I pondered if I should even post epic fails.
The main image lighthouse was with my original paper. I need to pencil sketch first because the ink smudges. The paper lets the watercolour blend very well. Once its dry I then outline in ink. I thought that my original sketch in pencil wasn't very good, and I figured oh well its a good practice. I really didn't think it would turn out well. Surprisingly... I'm happy with it.

The inserted image was with new paper. I found out that it doesn't let the watercolour blend as well..or I need to be quicker with the process. But this paper doesn't smudge the ink. Huh! No pre sketching needed in pencil. I expected that it would have turned out better. But I totally do not like this one at all. Going to try it again.

Lighthouses in both are great! Funny how paper makes a big difference..

LJM - awesome you are investigating new things! In the one you don’t like, there is unusual effect of layers in the path which looks a good one for peonies painting. The main painting is great! I like the building with built-in lighthouse!

Thanks @paintingblondie. Yes paper makes all the difference ...and practice.
Thanks @Sunnylady. This is a new path for me.. Learning lots...what do you mean by. "Peonies painting?"
Thanks @tom0779. I hope to improve. Time will tell. Thanks also for your insight into how you do some of your pieces. I kind of felt that I was cheating by sketching first..lol.

@LJM - I meant a flower painting and peony as the kind. The flower has many gentle petals. And the road to the lighthouse has so many variations of color and such a gentle color transitions and shimmer that reminded me about the peonies petals.

Thanks Sunnylady, I understand what you mean by this. Interesting, maybe my new paper is better used for different subjects or style of watercolour. I had such a difficult time with the sky( inserted image).. I used many layers to try to fix blotchy areas.. I lost focus on what the paper did in other areas. Thank you (as always ) for your insightful comments. They are very much appreciated.

@tom0779 I totally agree and feel pretty much the same. Thanks for your feedback.
