Painted from my front carport a couple weeks ago, this was my first ever Plein air painting and I finished it as the sun rose over the Wasatch. The view is of Mt Olympus and Neffs Canyon in Salt Lake City, Utah. Painted on an 18x24” canvas.

Another beauty!
Thanks everyone! As for the experience.. I would say, still learning but overall very positive. I still add or embellish some of what I see for the overall scene, but not really a whole lot. I take all visual information as inspiration as to keep the pressure down on myself and I have a lot more fun this way. I have found most useful my little cutout of paper that I use to look through to get the scene it’s a rectangle that resembles my 18x24” canvas. Once I pick out what my composition will roughly be based on I get moving. I move quickly and it pays when painting outside because the elements really change the process you would ordinarily choose sometimes in the studio. For instance, closing the blinds when the sun shines on your canvas or pallet which distorts color. Or turning a light on when there is not enough. Other “problems” include bugs and wind.
All said, I absolutely love the experience of setting up, painting, and finishing the painting and going home. Being out in nature is where almost all of us find the most inspiration so why not just paint on the balcony or in the park if you have the means to.

How do you like this experience so far? Any learnings about the process? Do you move things around to create visually appealing story to the viewer from what is in front of the eyes?
