I'm conflicted about calling this one an original, as it started out original but later I drew from Waterfall in the Woods EP when I got stuck. Not sure how I feel about this one, composition wise. I wish I had followed the rule of thirds more, and my cliffs are bugging me.
I had two major stumbling blocks with this one:
1. After finishing the top half and getting the waterfall in, I wanted do foliage in yellow-greens/orange-reds but I imagined it would look disjointed from the rest of it. I felt like I ran out of room, and that adding non-purple foliage would distract.
2. The big tree. I have an addiction to painting dead/bare trees. I initially wanted it to have foliage, but when I imagined where to put leaves, it seemed like it would block out too much of the background. I also would have added another tree next to the big guy but I reached my limit for this painting. Maybe I'll continue working on it someday.
Any tips are appreciated, sorry for the wall of text!!
Really nice Jeff.
Really beautiful!
Thank you Brian, Tony, and Sandy!
I appreciate the comment about the tree, Brian, thank you.
I think this wonderful as is! This is a difficult composition but I think you achieved the short depth well.
This is beyond gorgeous!!
That's beautiful!
WOW! Jeff! This is a top-level composition! It's gorgeous! I wouldn't rework it in the future. It's complete to my eyes. I love your colors. It's a very soothing painting to look at. Your cliffs are beautiful. What is bugging you about them?
wow fantastic!
I commented before I read what you wrote, don't change a thing its perfect!
Thank you Tomi, Lc, Samedirtybrush, Nancy, and Jessie!
Tomi thank you for your comment about the depth, I'm always worried things look flat.
Nancy, thank you for your kind words. The cliffs are bugging me bc of the perspective. But seeing everyone's nice comments have made me feel a bit better about how they look.
Thanks everyone.
This is terrific! It is so - smooth and glassy, almost void of brushstrokes. Lovely center lighting framed with the darker edges. That tree is super, and I never noticed any perspective issues with the cliffs.
Thank you Pam!
Really beautiful and nice composition Jeff. I agree leaving the tree bare/dead was a nice add. There is always *something* in our paintings we don’t care for. I wouldn’t worry about what you mentioned though. Looks great :)

Really beautiful and the bare tree is outstanding! No leaves for him was the right choice in my opinion. Super work Jeff!
