Painted this one a while back and was focused on practicing trees and sun rays. Background trees were painted with gesso. A Nic Hankins painting inspired this one.
Thank you Lightsnow. I ran across some Nic Hankins paintings and liked this idea. He painted on a tall narrow canvas so this doesn’t have the tall tree effect. His two tutorials on YouTube are excellent.
I agree about the gesso underpainting. It helps me see where I’m headed early on in the process.
The knife work on the bark was wearing me out but it produced a good result. Give it a try!
I love this. The sun rays are wonderful!
Thanks Tammy, I should practice more of it on gesso under painted pieces.

Very nicely done. Were you inspired by the one Bram did? He has a Facebook page called Happy Trees Art with Bram. He made a redwood forest painting similar to this one. I always had it on my list of ones to try. My favorite paintings are the ones with black gesso first with additions of oils on top, particularly opaque colors like white to produce the illusion of mistiness and sun rays. You did an excellent job with this one through and through. Congrats!
