Sphere Studies

Felix 24 Oct 2024

Getting back into oil paints with this little study of spheres to get a feel how the paints behave. Already booked a lesson with a pro painter I know to get a better intro into all the mechanics of oil painting like correct color mixing, brush loading and paint thining.

Which one is your favorite? 1,2,3 or 4? 😊

Really nice study!

Very nice. All are great

wow, I've recently tried this myself, and it is harder than it looks. I like #2 (top right) the most, because the bounce light looks good, the cast shadow has occlusion and penumbra, and the form shadow blends well into the center light and highlight. But which one do you like the most? I look forward to see what you work on with your pro teacher!

I also like number two the most, but every one of the spheres has a reason why I like them.

Number 1 is nice because I didn't rely on blending so much. It's also the first thing I've painted in oils since 8 years or so, so a nice feeling for me personally.

Number 2 for the reasons you've mentioned.

Number 3 has a nice old masters flair to it with the dark background

Number 4 I really like the contrast in color temperatures between sphere and background.

cool to hear your thoughts on each one!

Nice my friend Felix, I think the two on the right side I like best ✌️

A cool study. I vote for 2, too.

I like the shape of the shadow on 4 but my favourite would be 2 for colour, highlight and blending. 3 is different not being able to see the shadow it looks like it's floating in mid air, it could be a planet. It also reminds me of stone marbles I used to play with when I was a kid (they were worth 25 glass ones)!
