Original Creation

Takhlakh Lake

Dan53 19 Sep 2026

Oil on 18x24 canvas. My son in law gave me a picture of his favorite fishing spot when he was a kid growing up in Washington State. Thought I would try to paint it for him. The lake is like a mirror and my first attempt I painted the mountain in the lake and lightly pulled down and brushed across to make reflections and the mountain was all over the canvas. This time I didn’t mess with it and just cut in water lines. I think it works but any helpful feedback would be great. Thanks for taking a look.

So pretty!

Thanks so much Pietro and Sandy!

The reflection is very much like a mirror. You obviously spent some time on that. I really can't offer advice. I wonder if instead of pulling down and going across with the two inch brush maybe softening it with the blender brush would achieve the look you were going for.

Thanks for the suggestion KJay. I was going for a mirror image and wondering if there is a way to get a bit of a ripple to the image without messing it all up. The blender brush might be the answer. I’ll have to play around with it.

I can totally understand this being a favorite spot. What a lovely place!
I also like the flowers in the front because it gives depth.
(what are those exactly? Do you know? I don't think we have those over here.)

Yeah, using the blender brush might be the way to go.
Ever so slightly pulling up (yes, UP. Bob does that in "Reflections of Calm" S31E01 with the reflected mountains) and then across. Or only across.
Blender brush should be soft enough to not end up with the mountain all over the place.

I especially like the foreground flowers, very nice!

Thanks so much for your helpful comments Titia! I just watched Reflections of Calm and see what you described. While his mountain reflection doesn’t have any real detail, I can see how he pulls up and then across. I’ll try that using the blender brush and barely touch so the colors don’t mix. When you see that lake it really is just like a mirror on a calm day!

The flowers in the foreground are called Beargrass. My representation is close but they are very beautiful seeing them for real. Thanks again!

Thanks Larry for the compliment! Much appreciated.
