I sometimes paint maps for author pen pals and this is one of them that I recently finished for author bud William L. Hahn for his fantasy series set in "The Lands". Specifically, this area is called the North Mark, and encompasses a vast array of types of topography, including a great cavernous split that bisects the continent, lakes, rivers, a sea marsh, desert, forest and many tiny castles that are only 1/2" to 3/4" in size. It was for this painting that I did my color study for a castle.
I love this! What a neat idea. Iām amazed that you got such detail especially considering the small size of the castles. It takes a very steady hand to prevent them from becoming indistinguishable blobs. I especially like the desert areas and the cliff to the north. Sounds like I have a new book series to check out. Well done!
Really creative and I love the idea. Well done with lots of details :)
For any who might wish to see a "before and after", this image has Will's original sketch he created in Map Creator (I think was the name of the software) and my map with labels.

A huge improvement from what he had for sure!

Forgot to mention, the rather bland topography to the north is purposely so. I spoke at length with Will about this and he was adamant that he had yet to explore that part of his world, and wished it purposely left vague and indistinct.
