Advice requested, please. I have a love/hate relationship with rocks. The foreground ones aren't too bad, though not great. But see the big brown blob in the midground center? That's supposed to be big boulders, almost like a cliff face on the edge of the frozen lake. Instead, it just looks like muddy riverbank. Can anyone give me tips for making realistic looking rocks. And I don't mean the double-loaded filbert brush rocks that BR does. I can do those. I want to make rocks and boulders that look more craggy and three dimensional. Any feedback would be appreciated.
This is really nice painting. No help on your rock issue.
I think tel was investigating rocks. Maybe tel can give you some guidance.
WOW!! This is a stunning painting Brian! I love everything about it. We are our own worse critic. I know when something bothers me, all I can see is that particular thing. So I get your irritation with that boulder. I think it's a lighting tweaking and the way it lays in the frozen river. It may look like a bank because you carved the edge of the river into the boulder instead of having the boulder bulging out in to the river??? Not sure if I got your vision there?
Thanks, Nancy. You are right, we are tough on ourselves. I'm wondering if maybe I need to think of rocks as "little mountains". We can make our mountains stand up tall and craggy or be more rounded. I wanted those distant rocks to stand up like a cliff, with trees on top. I think I just need to adjust my thinking about these things a bit. Thanks for the tips.
excellent job
just noticed your comment about rocks.. its funny I was going to say how much I liked them ... keep doing what you are doing from my perspective.. the one in the centre from of the image with the shadow is brilliant as is the one in the mod ground.. The shadow is what makes them look 3D mess around with the shadows bur not too much as they are good anyway.. it's all in the eye of the observer. Happy painting
