Started with black gesso on the bottom, gray in the middle, and white at the top.
Then, I added black gesso trees coming in from the edges. First time doing that.
I think the graduation of gesso is how I got the water to look darker near the shore and lighter as it goes away. Happy accident? You bet. I'll take it.😁
