One of my all-time top 5 paintings. Really like this one... won't be gessoing over it.
No Liquid White-just a linseed oil base. Put the blue and red on blotchy, leaving the white canvas to serve as clouds.
Used only a knife and three brushes - one-inch, fan, and liner.
I also think I'm starting to see shades of color. Always been a little 'color blind.' Well, not really. I just don't get into all the subtle nuances. Red is red. Blue is blue. But I did just find out from my wife that a green rug I've been stepping on for the last five years is actually gray. So, who knows? ๐
Anyway, I learned a few more things, but this post is already long enough.
Regards.
Thank you, painting blondie. It's nice not having to clean up as many tools.
Very nice work
Great painting! Nice work on the the trees! Mountain is beautiful.
Thank you, Mgiese84, Sunnylady, and Tom0779 for the kind words.
I wasn't really all that happy with the mountain and evergreens WHILE I was painting them. But I kept plugging along. Afterwards, when the whole scene was completed, I then liked those particular elements.
Do you folks feel the same way while painting, or do you immediately fall in love with whatever it is you're creating at the moment (i.e. a mountain, background trees, evergreens)? I'm wondering if it's a case of just being too close to the work, both figuratively and literally.
Thanks again.
Beautiful. I especially love the background trees.
Thank you, Umagaan. I was actually pleased with those background trees right away. In addition to a brownish base color, I went over them and added a touch of dark green and then some yellow to get a slightly varied hue to them.
@Alex_Ander - generally when I paint I do not do any assessment of liking or disliking. Sometimes I stumble upon something and understand that I need to improve or make it different , I mush and mush that thing, I get mad sometimes, sometimes I fully destroy that thing and start over, sometimes entire painting gets destroyed and I start over. Problem mainly arises when I am to close to the painting, do not have breaks and when I did not do a proper sketch. Sketch is helping a lot with perspective and angles. Also when I can catch myself that I got mad I try to stop myself and walk out before piece is destroyed. I am getting better with recognizing this feeling early. I come back in a week or so.
I try not to paint few paintings at one time, as I am afraid it will not be finished.
Now when painting is done and put for drying for two-three weeks I forget about all the issues I had during painting. I try not to look at the painting while it dries at least for the first week. Sometimes after drying, things I struggled with look quite good and I like them. Sometimes they still donโt, then I let painting dry and go later with fixing it.
After all things I did I mostly quite happy with the results. However there are 40% when I am not at all and they get repainted over or worked over till I am quite happy.
If to say in percentage maybe 5% I love. 10% I like them, but there are some bits.., rest 45% is just okay and 40% I donโt like.
Thanks, Sunnylady. Good to know. I need to work on just painting something and moving on to the next part of the scene...and not critiquing anything right away.
Alex, no problems. Just today I finally painted. I followed tutorial and it was nice and enjoyable. However when I thought I am 95% done and I will do only little things I looked at the photo and realized there are issues with composition. So I used simple digital tool to fix those issues in the digital world first. Now I let both things to sit and when I come back to resume I have a fresh brain and fresh eye and assess if those digital tweaks are good enough to let viewer to stop and observe the painting.
This is fabulous! I love it. Almost looks like a photo!
Thank you, BrookeBowling. And you're right. It IS a photo. The actual canvas is still drying in my workshop. ๐ Kidding. Glad you like it.
