  • Request for healing thoughts for my dog's surgery

I’m so glad he’s home! I’m sure it’s going to be challenging to keep him from moving too much. Did the vet have any recommendations other than isolation? Would maybe a thunder shirt would help? I don’t know if they work for dogs but one of my cats stays super calm when she has it on. It’s similar to swaddling a baby. Something about the snugness makes them feel secure. The only trick is getting it on...little tubbo does not appreciate being dressed lol

    Thunder shirts worked great for my mom's dog on new years eve. He's even calmer with them than that one year where the vet gave him sedatives to get through the night.

      Look at that face! Poor little baby that’s a big incision but honestly not super noticeable until you zoom. How long does the cone of shame need to stay on?

        @Colin Hudson#827 Hi Colin! Thanks for asking. He's recovering well. Running into some challenges with meds because he has the flat face so I can't just shove the meds down his throat (I have bloody fingers to prove THAT didn't work), and he has outsmarted the pill pockets and stirring it in with his food. Fun times!!
        Lilikins Yeah, I keep telling him chicks dig scars, lol. Good thing dogs don't really care about that. Should be an interesting conversation piece in dog parks in the future. The doc said at least two weeks for the cone, but because of the way he is shaped, he can't reach his leg to lick it anyway, so I will probably take it off in a few days. It does kind of act as a natural sedative though, which is nice since he can't run, jump, or climb stairs for two months.

            doggymommee8301 what did they give him? Gabapentin comes in liquid form. You could potentially syringe feed him that if that is one of his meds. There is a liquid pain med they often give to dogs as well for pain management and as a cough suppressant. I’m drawing a blank at the moment but if you think you would be able to administer a liquid via oral syringe more easily talk to yourself vet. I’m sure they would rather alter his meds than risk him going without.

                Lilikins thanks. I think I figured out the trick today to get his meds down. He’s on: Previcox, Rixlexine, Gabapetin, and Trazodone. I’m sure it’s the Trazodone he’s hating the most, because like his momma he is not liking getting knocked out. If tomorrow is such a fight with the antibiotics again, I’ll call the vet back and see if I can change the antibiotics. Yesterday when I called they told me to mash it up in his food (which I had already tried, worked the first time, not the second time). Stubborn boy. Too smart too, haha.

                    I understand the difficulty of giving antibiotics! We had to get long acting abx injections for one of our cats because the pill was so bitter it couldn’t be hidden in food and pilling cats is a nightmare. Dogs are usually so easy - just wrap it up in cheese or peanut butter and they gobble it down. Unfortunately some are a little too smart for their own good 😌

                    We have two puggles (pug/beagle mixes); our boy is 14 ad our girl is 13. Our boy has had two knee surgeries. He tore his ACL on his left knee several years ago. Then about 3 years later, he tore the ACL in his other knee. Both times he was out of commission for about 6 weeks. We felt so bad that we bought him a wagon to pull him around in outside. He will be 15 in May and get around pretty well. He's not as fast as he used to be but he is still my happy boy.

                    I hope your little guy is doing much better. Is he a Frenchie?

                    Lilikins yes, so true. My kitty was a nightmare with antibiotics. I’ve had quite a few dogs in my lifetime and I’ve NEVER had issues with meds before. This is the first time.
                    Bobschmidt21 yes he’s a Frenchie. He’s just a babe, only 1.5 years old. My other two are labradoodles, they’re litter mates, will be 11 next week. I remember when they were just wee pups too. Man time flies! Glad your baby is still out and about. Felix started a dog thread in the forum. You should post a photo there!!

                        Lilikins Oh the stories I could tell you! It has been an adventure to say the least. His suture site is healing well, and he is putting weight on his leg sometimes. Medications are still a nightmare, and he forgot he was potty trained for a bit.

                          Aww poor thing. Not his fault with the potty booboos though. Between the pain, anesthesia lingering, and his meds he was probably so out of it he didn’t know if he was inside, outside, or in another dimension lol.

                          So glad he’s on the mend!

                            Lilikins lol so right. I’m most certainly not mad at him! Breaks my heart really, it’s so hard to see our fur babies in pain. He did well today. No accidents, and we are all done with the antibiotics (one of the biggest pills), so there’s light at the end of the tunnel! Thanks again for inquiring about him.

                              Hi @Colin Hudson#947 ! Thank you! Merry (belated) Christmas to you as well! Caxton actually had a follow-up appointment today. X-rays looked good! He is finally allowed off leash in the house and back yard, and supervised play with my other dogs. Still no jumping for the next four months, but the vet didn't feel the need to see him again (unless the pins start coming out of his leg). Thanks for asking!
