  • Request for healing thoughts for my dog's surgery

Hugs! When is the procedure? Tomorrow? Please keep us posted and let us know how your pup is doing.

How are you planning on keeping him immobile? I knew of someone that had to contain her savannah for several weeks due to a leg injury and she found a crate/kennel that could be sectioned off small for the first weeks and then expand when he got stronger and also so she could sit in there with him occasionally. It was a big crate that just had ways to section it - I will have to see if I can find it. Are they giving gabapentin or tramadol for the pain? You don’t have to answer any questions if you don’t want but sometimes it helps to talk things out 🙂

It will be hard but you’re buddy will understand that what you are doing to immobilize him is for his own good and not for a punishment. Just be sure to reinforce that he’s a good boy with lots of snuggles and love. It’s amazing what they can pick up and understand.

    Lilikins thanks Lilikins for your concerns and questions! He goes in Tuesday morning. I’ve already got a kennel for him, and I’ll carry him outside when he needs to go potty. Thankfully he’s a typical Frenchie in that he’s lazy and sleeps a lot, this whole thing would be even worse if he were a very active dog. The hardest part is going to be bed time. All three dogs sleep in bed with me so I know it’s gonna be rough for him having to sleep in the kennel instead of curled up with me. The vet is going to keep him overnight so I’ll pick him up Wednesday. I plan to work from home the whole week (or take time off if I need to) so I can be here to keep a close eye on him. I’m not sure what pain meds they will be giving us, but rest assured I won’t be leaving the vet without any! I will update on this thread once the surgery is done and I hear back from his doctor.

        Thanks everyone! The doctor called me a while ago to let me know they were prepping him (catheter in, all that good stuff). It is 9:30am Tuesday morning where I am at the time of writing this, and the doctor said I should expect a call from him by 1pm. They are keeping him overnight, so I will be picking him up tomorrow. I really appreciate all of you, more than you know!

        Hi All! I just got off the phone with the doctor. Caxton's surgery was a success. It took a while longer than anticipated, because the groove in his bone had to be cut pretty deep, but knee reconstruction was a success. Now for about four months of recovery and physical therapy. Well worth keeping my baby out of a wheelchair!! It's near on 5pm Tuesday here, and I will be picking him up 3pm tomorrow. Thank you everyone for all of your kind words and thoughts!

          Oh how wonderful. Glad to read that everything went well. Now onto days of kisses, hugs, & scritches. Don't forget to take care of yourself too and try to rest while your furbaby rests. All good wishes sent to you!

          Let’s see if I can figure out how to add a photo of him trying to stay awake with his cone of shame on. I’m telling him chicks dig scars since he’s gonna have a huge one on his leg.
