So, recently I have finished watching the entirety of The Joy of Painting, and I've done about 20 tutorials of Bobs. I think I have the basics down. I definitely plan on doing more of his tutorials, but I kind of want to expand my knowledge on alla prima oil painting. I've watched a few episodes of Bill Alexander's show. I know Kevin Hill exists, but have watched none of his material. What are some steps you all would recommend for how to expand my skill set in this method of oil painting next besides just practicing and continuing to paint. I also think I want to start tackling doing wildlife painting next and wouldn't mind getting some recommendations on how to learn that in the alla prima method. Any feedback would be appreciated 🙂

ironchefmitty I would suggest to try Kevin Hill next. But search carefully for the longest episode, or invest in buying one from his website. This will be challenging, but it will give you glance into other painting approach in alla prima. Kevin I would say is transitional style between going into serious and more complex adventures with paint. I also would recommend after Kevin's tutorial to switch back to easier one with Bill as the way to depressurize.
Pretty much you got all the trio: Bill, Bob, Kevin who are good for starting and progressing to intermediate.
If you want to investigate more on trees and mountains. There is youtube channel Painting with Yovette where she goes into details how to get things done. Nice one to learn as well if you pursue landscape.
Another one is Mazart on youtube, you can search, there she does some animals too and you can get few ideas from her. I will wait to hear from community too about animals painting tutorials - I wanna try something new.
On a different note if you want to invest in your learning there is a subscription to www.nma.art where you can attend professional artist classes on paint/composition/drawing/etc.

I need to add Bill teaches one thing Bob does not - he put idea about considering light direction. Also on Alexander Art you can see other names who you can learn from. As soon you start considering light management in your paintings this will mean you are ready for the more advanced tutors. Go and try Kevin Hill and do not loose your heart if it turns too challenging, you can manage everything. I had first KH and I was drained but happy with the result as it was looking like the direction I wanted to go with painting approach, then more than a year I repeated the same episode from Kevin and I saw improvements. Kevin Hill will give you some knowledge about better color mixing to bring you one step above Bob and Bill.

Kevin is great and a good next step, i have followed a couple of Kevins tutorials myself and they turned out ok but it's about what you can learn from the process and not necessarily the end result.
